The standard polite present and future. Built from the ます stem plus ます, ません, ました, etc.

  • です for nouns; ます for verbs

How to form

  1. 1Change the dictionary form to the ます stem, then add ます.
  2. 2Godan: change the final う-row kana to the い-row (書く → 書きます).
  3. 3Ichidan: drop る and add ます (食べる → 食べます).
  4. 4する → します; 来る → きます.
  5. 5来る → 来ます (reading きます).

Cautions

Do not add ます directly to the dictionary form (×書くます).
行く → 行きます (not 行くます).
